March Project: Fail

Erm... yeah. My finish-a-project-every-month thing? Failed for March. I had a lot of things going, had a few options of things I could have gotten done, but quite simply didn't get to them. So, March is a fail.

But I'm not giving up, because that would be... um... well, I can't think of the word right now, because I'm tired and just got home from work and wanting to collapse, but suffice to say the word amounts to "not cool". And I don't want to give up entirely after only the third month. Instead, I'm going to accept that sometimes we fail, and that I just need to try again.

Okay. Returning to irregularly posted nonsense now.

A project a month?

I have mentioned that I'm crazy, right? Because I think I'm reminding myself of that right now. For whatever reason, despite all the stuff I'm trying to do and make and get done this year, I want to have a goal of finishing one project every month this year.

There are good reasons for this. One of those reasons is that I'm particularly bad at finishing things. I happily start new hobbies, new projects, new ideas, whatever, and then attack them furiously in the first few days, weeks, or sometimes months. But after that, I start itching for something new, and the project I had started before falls aside, and is gradually hidden under a mountain of "Other Stuff I MUST Do". Before long, the project is completely forgotten about until I do a kinda-yearly clean up and find it again. "Oh yeah! I forgot about this! This was so cool, why didn't I finish it??" And then the cycle starts again.

There could be some badness about this whole thing though. I mean, I can't get around the fact that I will come face-to-face with my own bad habit of not finishing things. But the chances are good that when I do my kinda-yearly clean up (which is way, way overdue - by a few years or so?), I'm going to be faced with far more projects than I can possibly finish in a year. I'm going to discover a lot of projects that stopped because of, most likely, boredom. I'm also going to find stuff that wasn't finished for a good reason. I get the feeling a lot of the video games I wanted to make will fall into that category, tagged with "because I don't have the skills yet".

But, on the upside, I've already gotten started. I finished making a baby blanket for a friend in January (which will actually get to them eventually, honest!). I'm not even halfway into February and I'm nearly finished with a shawl I'm knitting, and that definitely can count as my February finished project.

I suppose what I'll have to do now is to go through everything in my house and computer, and make a list of all the projects I started and never finished. Once I have a list, I can try to sort out which ones will be quick finishes, which will take me forever and a day, and which simply are not going to happen. I like lists. You know, when I don't misplace them. Which is... erm... always.

I want to work from home

I know, it's something a lot of people want. Working from home, for a lot of us, is that ideal job that is always out of reach. We can see something that vaguely looks like the opportunity, but it's always either too fuzzy to see clearly, too hard to get hold of, or too far to reach. We think that if we could just get that one perfect job that lets us stay in our comfort zone, everything will be better.

I don't really believe this any more. It's not too fuzzy, I'm just not looking at it from the right angle yet. It's not too hard, I just haven't put the work in yet. It's not too far, I'm just not really reaching for it yet. And there is no such thing as a perfect job. Even people who work from home still have to do that part called "working". If they didn't, it wouldn't be a job, it would be a hobby, and most people don't get paid for hobbies.

My goal is to work from home in the near future. I'm calling it a goal rather than a dream, because my dreams have a nasty habit of fizzling into whatever else is in my head at any given moment. I don't want to lose this goal to my own lack of focus. I want it to happen, and rather than just hoping for it, I'm going to work for it. I will make it happen.

So I'm bracing myself. I need to find the right angle and figure out what I can do. I need to make sure I've got all the skills and knowledge I need to reach it. I need to make myself work to grab hold of the opportunity once I've created it. (I need to stop talking like I'm trying to write some kind of inspirational speech, while I'm at it.)
