I've been itching for a new game today. It's not as if I'm lacking in games to play; I have at least 20 of them on my list of things-to-play. Many of those are huge, sprawling RPGs that will take me hours and hours to finish. Yet, I find myself looking for something I don't have. Me? Crazy and obsessive? Nah.
Part of this itch for something new is probably because I'm also itching to design an RPG, but I quite simply don't have the skills yet, unless I make something very simplistic and probably not fun to play. It also doesn't help that I want to make one of those huge, sprawling RPGs I usually love to play.
Then I took to the internet. After all, when in need, the internet will provide... er... something like that. And I found the most fabulous list of online RPGs I can play right in my browser.
Now, browser RPGs are not new to me. They've been around for ages, and I've tried a handful in the past. Runescape in particular comes to mind. This one seems to be fairly popular, though I confess I played it for maybe twenty minutes before clicking out of it. It just didn't grab me the way an RPG should.
So I'm going on a mission to find an amazing browser RPG (or several, if I'm lucky). It should be something where the story is intriguing, but not forcing pages and pages of reading for the player to understand the world. It should be engrossing, making me feel like I want to play just a little bit longer whenever I need to stop. It should have plenty to do to keep me occupied, rather than being a constant grind for levels. It should be open for exploration without being so big that gameplay feels aimless and quests feel pointless. Finally, while cutting-edge graphics are never required, the game should look good enough for me to be able to stare at it for a couple hours at a time without getting a headache, or cringing at every animation.*
This is a tall order to fill. Thankfully, I have a lot of RPGs to try out. Hopefully at least one of them will achieve these things. I'll talk about the games I've tried here - not full, proper reviews, just my thoughts and opinions on things I think are important. While I have a few marked out to start with, if you have any suggestions on particular games I should look at, please tell me in the comments!
